Don Sandilands - Deck '45
I was born in London January 14, 1928 and at age eight moved to Edinburgh,
Scotland. My father was in the Scots Guards at Buckingham Palace and
joined the Merchant Navy in 1940. I joined the Sea Cadets in 1942 and then
to the Vindi in '45. I shipped out as a deck -boy on M.V. Samanco (P. S.
N. C.) and peggied for two trips. Then on S. S. Stancord, S. S. Keila, M.
V. Coulbreck, S. S. Grainton, all for one or more trips as J. O. S., S. O. S.,
E. D. H., and finally on S. S. Belhaven for three months before emigrating (did
not jump ship) to Canada to marry my girlfriend from N. B. That did not work out
and the sea kept calling me but fate intervened and I ended up in the insurance
business for 44 very interesting years. I have been happily married to
Ginni (Eugenia) from Santigo, Chile, for 17 years and we live in Scarborough,
Ontario.
